Assam is border of the North and East by Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram on the on the South while West Bengal and Bangladesh on the west. Assam the lush green land of plains and dense thick forest is gateway to North East India. The mighty Brahma Putra River which has its origin in the Tibet cast its majestic force in Assam. This beautiful land of blue mountains and rivers is known for its tea, flora and fauna, the world famous one horned rhinoceros and other rare species of wildlife on the verge of extinction are found in Assam. Barring Africa there is no places in the world where such rare wildlife is found.

GuwahatiJanardhan Temple - Guwahati

Guwahati in the Assam state is a major tea trading area, Guwahati capital of Assam on the banks of the Brahma Putra river has many ancient Hindu temples and is the gateway to this part of the country. Northeast of the city is the Kaziranga wildlife reserve, famous for its Indian one-horned rhinoceros. The sanctuary also has wild buffalo, deer, elephant, tiger, bear and a wide variety of water birds. Shillong, a pleasant hill station, is renowned for its climate and breathtaking views.  Cherapunji, 58 Kms away, is the wettest place on earth with an average rainfall of over 1,000 cms. Other parts of this region include Nagaland, Tripura, Manipur, Mizoram and Arunachal Pradesh. This region is the chief tribal area of India with a number of tribes who speak many different languages and dialects.

Kaziranga National ParkKaziranga National Park

 

Kaziranga National Park the oldest in North East India situated partly in Golaghat District and partly in the Nagaon District of Assam. It covers an area of 430 sq. kms. Known to house the Great Indian one horned Rhinoceros. The landscape of Kaziranga is of sheer forest, tall elephant grasses, rugged reeds, marshes in shallow pools. Kaziranga has been declared as a National Park in1974. Wildlife Species found here are Rhinoceros, Elephant, Indian bison, Swamp Deer, Sambar, Hog Deer, Sloth Bear, Tiger, Leopard, Jungle Ccat, Hog badger, Capped Langur, Hoolock Gibbon, Jackal, Goose, Hornbills, Ibis, Cormorants, Egret, Heron, Fishing Eagle etc. During Winter a large number of migratory birds are seen here.

Sibsagar

Rang Ghar - Sibsagar

Once upon a time Sibsagar used to be the capital of the Ahom Kings who ruled the state of Assam before the British came to Rule India. The small town was build around the Sibsagar Tank, dugged over 200 years ago the tank is above the level of the town level though located in the heart of the town. Fed by natural springs, the tank is surrounded by deep ditches and earthen moats. Three Mandirs are built on banks of this Tank, The Shiva Mandir built in 1734 suppose to be the tallest Mandir of Lord Shiva in India, Vishnu Mandir and Dev Murti Mandir.
 

Places Of Interest:

Sibsagar Tanks, Kereng Ghar, Joysagar Tank and Temple Gargaon Palace, Charaideo are the main places of Interest, other places include old Sastras of the Vaishava cult, Muslim Dargahs, Budhist and Sakta shrines, there are more than 500 tanks, vaults, earthen forts and castles belonging to the Ahom, Manipuri, Jaintia Shan and Kachari kings in this sub division.

Haflong

Haflong Lake - Haflong

Haflong situated at a height of 680 meters above the sea level in the lush green mountain region terrain lies this lovely lakeside resort which is Assam's only hill station. It is the head quarters of North Cachar Hills District and is situated at a distance of 355 kms from Guwahati. Haflong is the name of variety of orchids, one of them being the rare Blue Vanda. When visiting Haflong one should visit the village of Jatinga ten minutes drive from Haflong,  this village has attracted ornithologists from all over the world to unravel the mystery of the flocks of little migratory birds crashing to death on dark nights. The phenomenon is attributed by scientists to the sensitivity of these birds to infra red emissions of the torches borne by the villages during the nights. An elevated watch tower provides an opportunity to see this bird mystery.
