Ahmedabad, one of the major industrial centers in India, has often been called the' Manchester of the East'. The city is the major entry point to the west coast state of Gujarat, famous for its Asiatic lions in the Gir forest; the Temple of Somnath; Lothal, the site of a Harappan or Indus Valley civilization; Jain temples at Palitana; and a distinct regional cuisine. The state offers many fairs and festivals in its numerous temple towns and is a major centre for hand-crafted textiles in the country. Excursions include the Sun temple of Modhera built in the 11th century; Nalsarovar, a 116 sq. km. lake and home for vast flocks of indigenous and migratory birds. The city is an interesting place to wander around, with narrow bazaar streets, crowded and colorful, houses having ornately carved wooden fronts. The Calico Museum of Textiles has a display of modern and antique textiles, including rare tapestries, wall hangings, costumes and old weaving machines. Sabarmati Ashram, about 6km. from the city, was Mahatma Gandhi's head quarters during the long struggle of Indian independence.

RajkotWankaner - Rajkot

Founded in 1610 by Vibhaji Jadeja and Raju Sandhi, it later became the capital of Saurashtra and a head quarters for the British rule. Mahatma Gandhi spent his early years in Rajkot while his father was a Diwan to the Saurashtran Nawab, and the house where Gandhi lived is now a museum named Kaba Gandhi No Delo.

Jamnagar

Lakhota Fort - Jamnagar

Jamnagar was built around the small Ranmal Lake around 1540 AD, Jamnagar was the Abode of the Jamthe Jadeja Rajput rulers of Nawabnagar and the capital of their state, is an interesting city which enjoys a variety of distinctions. It is renowned for its pearl fisheries, a naval base of some importance, and a certain type of tie and dye fabrics.

Sight Seeing Places: Solarium : Known as the Ranjit Institute of Poly-Radio Therapy. A slowly revolving tower provides full day long sunlight. It is open to visitors after working hours.

Lakhota Fort And Kotha Bastion In the centre of old Jamnagar, on an island in the middle of the lake, are two magnificent old structures : the Lakhota Fort and the Kotha Bastion. Lakhota Fort is Jamnagar's Museum and its terraces display a fine collection of sculpture that spans a period from the 9th to 18th Century. The Kotha Bastion is Jamnagar's arsenal. One of its most interesting sights is an old well, the water of which can be drawn by blowing into a small hole in the floor.
Rozi and Bedi Ports These are attractive seaside picnic spots and offer good fishing facilities.

Dwarka

Dwarkadish Temple - Dwarka

Dwarka has a special importance as one of the major Hindu pilgrim place, known as the capital of Lord Krishna's Kingdom. Dwarka is one of the four most important pilgrim places. It also has an important historical monument. The architecture of the old Dwarka of Shri Krishna is majestic and wonderful. A bevy of lovely temples that display flamboyant structural designs and marvelous architecture are the signature destinations in Dwarka. These lovely shrines reveal the city association with lord Krishna and indeed a visit to these holy spots would be an invigorating experience to all. Legend has it that after the death of Krishna, Dwarka city was submerged with water, devastating the entire Yadava clan. Recent excavations have proved the existence of well-planned cities on the shores of the river Gomati, which testifies this legendary belief. Apart from the tranquil ambiance of the holy shrines, Dwarka offers some of the appealing beaches, where the glittering waters and the warm weather tempts the beholder with its inherent charm

Porbander

Sudama Mandir - Porbander

Porbunder is chiefly noted as the birth place of Mahatma Gandhi. In ancient times, the city was called Sudamapuri after Sudan, a compatriot of Krishna, and there was once a flourishing trade from here to Africa and the Persian Gulf. The Africa connection is apparent in the number of Indian Blacks called Siddi, who form a separate caste of Dalits. Its ancient maritime activities trade with Arabia, Africa and Iran have given way to industries of cement, chemical & Textiles units.

Somnath VeravalSomnath Temple - Veravel

 

Somnath Temple a major Hindu pilgrimage centre, is said to have been built out of gold by Soma, the Moon God (and subsequently in silver, wood and stone by Ravan, Lord Krishna & Bhim Dev). In keeping with the legend the stone facade appears golden at sunset. Mahmud Ghazni plundered it and removed the gates in 1024. Destroyed by successive Muslim invaders, it was rebuilt each time on the same spot. The final reconstruction did not take place until 1950 and is still going on. Unfortunately, it lacks character but it has been built to traditional patterns with a strong 50 m high tower that rises in clusters. Dedicated to Lord Shiva, it has one on the 12 sacred jyotir lingams.

Sasan Gir

Sasan Gir Lion Sanctuary

Sasangir is located in the paisley-shaped Kathiwad peninsula of Gujarat. Lying on the south-western fringes of the Saurashtra peninsula (west-central India), Sasangir or the Gir National Park is the natural habitat of some 300 Asiatic lions. A visit to Sasangir naturally means a visit to the lion sanctuary. The Sasangir National Park was created in 1913 and was given a sanctuary status in 1965. Easily accessible from the nearby major towns and cities, the terrain here is rugged with steep rocky hillsides and a few springs. Sasangir is also the natural habitat of a number of rare species of plants and animals that attract a large number of tourists every year.

Famous world over as the only refuge of the majestic Asiatic lion (Panthera leo), the National Park or the lion sanctuary makes a must visit for the nature lovers. The Asiatic lion measuring 2.75 meters in length and with a bigger tail tassel, bushier elbow tufts and more belly folds than his African cousin is a main attraction of this place. Besides the king of the jungle, Sasangir is also a natural habitat of some of the exotic flora and fauna of this peninsular region. Moreover, it also has some of the important reservoirs like the Nalsarovar lake that provide the much needed moisture to the flora and drinking water to the native animals. Sasangir also has some of the dry deciduous and tropical thorn forest and an evergreen corridor along the river sides. Among the common variety of trees you can find here are the teak, laburnum, acacia tendu, ber, jamun, amlosa, and bael. The crocodile farm developed in the forest is also one of the main attractions of the place. The sanctuary is open to visitors from mid October to mid June.

Junagarh

Ashoka's Edicts - Junagadh

Junagarh at the foothills of Mt. Girnar, is on record as far back as 250 B.C., the time of EmperorAsoka whose fourteen Rock Edicts can be seen cut into a great rock outside thecity. Today it is better known for the temples on Mt. Girnar, an important place of pilgrimage for the Jains. The 16 marble shrines can be reached after climbing 2000 steps. The oldest temple is that of Neminath, who was the 22nd Jain Tirthanker. There is also a Muslim shrine.
