Chandigarh a new city constructed in the 1950s, was designed by the French architect Le Corbusier. The Rose Garden, claimed to be the biggest in Asia, contains more than a thousand varieties of roses. Excursions include the Mughal gardens at Pinjore; Shimla, the summer capital British India; Kullu Manali, located in the mountain state of Himachal Pradesh. The Kullu valley is a lush, green valley with the sparkling Beas river running through it against a backdrop of snow-clad Himalayan peaks. Manali is the base for a number of exciting treks and expeditions. The City was a created to fulfill the need of a permanent capital of Punjab and Haryana, although Shimla was a temporary headquarters in those times. Chandigarh, the capital of both Punjab and Haryana, The white dome temple of Goddess Chandi Devi that stands on the slope of a hill, situated in the north-east of Chandigarh, on the edge of the Shivalik hill, is from where the city obtains its name Chandigarh.
