Meghalaya is one of the newest state with its capital in Shillong. For
bygone era it was summer retreat of the British, the beautifully
green golf course and several English county cottages testify to another influence besides the local one. Beautiful lakes and falls, hillside cottages, a large university, and the popular Bara Bazar are quaint aspects of this town.
Shillong
As the mist lifts
from the valley, the Shillong Peak becomes visible. When you reach the
top and look around, you know why Shillong is often called the
'Scotland of the East'. On the drive to Shillong from Guwahati, you
cross, hills covered with pineapple and betel plantations and pine
forests. What sets Shillong apart is its temperate climate. The city
is spread on hills covered with country houses in the English style.
Shillong abounds in waterfalls. The Crinoline and Elephant falls are a
sight to behold, as the water gushes down from a great height and the
spray flies in all directions. Cherapunji, 35 kms to the south, is one
of the world's wettest places with 45 inches (1,150 mm) of rain each
year! India's north-eastern state of Assam holds in reserve not only
much of the country's oil, but also much of its forests and wildlife.
At Kaziranga, in the north-east of Guwahati, is the national wildlife
reserve, the last hope of the single horned Indian rhino. Here the
rhino, once thought to be on the verge of extinction, roams freely in
its natural habitat. And in the north-east of Guwahati is the Manas
wildlife sanctuary which has some rare species like pygmy hog and
golden langur. The seven sisters of the north-east.
